BULLETIN

VOLUME: 2 N0:383 DATE: SEPTEMBER 5, 2025

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved a final register of 2,802,790 voters for the Anambra State Governorship Election scheduled to hold on Saturday, 8th November 2025.

Announcing the figures in a statement issued on Thursday, 4th September 2025, National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Sam Olumekun mni, said the register was compiled after the recent voter registration exercise and thorough clean-up of the data.

A total of 168,187 citizens had registered across the 326 Wards of the State between 8th and 20th July 2025. Following the display of the register for claims and objections from 26th July to 1st August, and subsequent scrutiny with the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), 27,817 records were found to be multiple registrations and expunged.

This left 140,370 valid new registrants, while 5,983 valid transfer applications were approved, bringing the total number of additional voters to 146,353.

Prior to the exercise, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the new additions, the figure now stands at 2,802,790.

By Local Government Area, Idemili North leads with 246,318 voters (8.79%), followed by Awka South with 216,611 (7.73%) and Ogbaru with 188,016 (6.71%). Dunukofia has 83,580 (2.98%) and Anambra West 71,332 (2.55%)—the lowest in the State.

Mr. Olumekun assured new registrants and those who applied for transfers or replacement of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) that their cards will be ready for collection before the governorship election, which is just 63 days away.

On political party registration, the Commission disclosed that 19 fresh letters of intent had been received since the last update, raising the total to 171 associations as of Wednesday, 3rd September 2025.

A shortlist of pre-qualified associations is being finalised for the next stage of processing. INEC appealed to applicants to avoid frequent changes to their logos, acronyms and leadership structures, warning that such practices delay the process.

The IVEC Chairman reaffirmed that all applications would be treated fairly and urged the associations to remain consistent in their submissions.

“The Commission will continue to communicate with Nigerians on all its activities,” he said.

INEC CALLS FOR DEEPER COLLABORATION TO TACKLE DISINFORMATION IN WEST AFRICA AND THE SAHEL

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for deeper collaboration to address the challenge of disinformation in West Africa and the Sahel.

The Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, made the call at the three-day Conference on “Information Integrity in West Africa and the Sahel” organised by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). The conference is holding in Praia, Cape Verde, from 3rd to 5th September 2025.

Represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the INEC Chairman explained that the Commission has continued to operate an open-door policy by regularly engaging Political Parties, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and the media to build confidence in the electoral process. He however, observed that disinformation persists despite government efforts under the Cybercrime Act.

Prof. Yakubu expressed concern over the conduct of some CSOs who align themselves with partisan interests, noting that such actions undermine their credibility. He also urged digital platform operators to strengthen internal policies against disinformation and fake news.

Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to transparency and openness in the conduct of elections, the Chairman warned that disinformation remains a serious threat to democracy.

In his opening address, the Deputy Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Dr. Lourenço Lopes, described disinformation as a global challenge that requires collective action. He underscored the importance of transparency, digital literacy, and stronger platform governance in safeguarding democracy.

Also attending the conference are the Commission’s Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi; Director of ICT, Mr. Lawrence Bayode; and Principal Administrative Officer, Voter Education and Publicity, Mrs. Patience Daso-George.
