Jega Receives EFCC Boss, Pledges Collaboration
The Hon. Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, OFR, has pledged to collaborate with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in the quest for free, fair and credible elections, come 2011. Professor Jega gave this assurance, when he received the Chairperson of the anti-graft Commission at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

He noted that he was inspired by the visit, taking into consideration his earlier promise to Nigerians that he would partner with other stakeholders, both national and international. He pledged to work closely with the EFCC to ensure transparency and guard against problems that might arise from the areas of contracts and general procurement.

Speaking earlier, the Chairperson of EFCC Mrs. Farida Waziri, commended the choice of the INEC Chairman, noting the manner in which the entire nation embraced this appointment and the proactiveness of the National Assembly in approving the Voters’ Registration budget.

She noted that EFCC is ready to partner with the INEC in the area of investigating companies bidding for procurements, so as to ensure that credible individuals and groups were engaged in the electoral process while the bad ones would be brought to book.

She also seized the opportunity to correct a report recently published by the media that she was planning to disqualify indicted candidates vying for political offices in the 2011 general Elections. She restated that the EFCC has no power to disqualify candidates in an election.
