The Voter Education drive of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may have received some boost with the Armed forces indicating willingness to complement the Commission’s effort by providing platforms to reach out to citizens.
This indication came when the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu received the Director of Defense Information, Major General John Enenche at the Commission’s Headquarters today.
Professor Yakubu noted that it was important to educate all citizens, including members of the armed forces community because they were citizen and registered voters who have rights to exercise their civic responsibilities. He said INEC was open to collaborations that would consolidate democracy and promote sound knowledge of the electoral process.
The INEC Chairman used the opportunity to urge Commission’s guest to support in mobilization of eligible citizens to participate in the on-going nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.
Professor Yakubu further commended the existing relationship with the Armed Forces and said INEC would explore every available opportunity to engage citizens on their civic responsibilities and urged the Armed forces to see the Commission as a willing partner in the promotion of voter education and voter enlightenment.
Earlier in his remarks, Major General Enenche explained that his visit was to strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the Armed Forces and INEC and also to provide INEC with the platform to engage citizens on voter enlightenment and voter education through the Armed Forces Radio Services.
The Director also commended the current leadership of INEC for its dedication and commitment to ensuring an improved electoral process, saying that it was a similar conviction on the part of the armed forces necessitated the visit. He assured that Armed Forces were ready to work with INEC to educate and enlighten the citizens for better elections.
