Nine New RECs Take Oath of Office
Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has sworn-in nine (9) additional Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), bringing the total number of serving RECs to 23.
 
At the Swearing-in ceremony held at the INEC Headquarters in Abuja, Professor Yakubu reiterated the Commission’s commitment in ensuring that 2019 general elections were remarkably improved and implored the new RECs to key into the Commission’s 2017-2021 Strategic Plan which is geared towards achieving its set objective.
 
 The INEC Chairman challenged the newly sworn-in RECs to be firm and courageous, saying: “as election manager, you must maintain the required openness and consultation. You must be very firm and courageous on the side of the law as well as our regulations and guidelines as required of you as unbiased umpires”.
 
Out of the 9 newly sworn in RECs, five have been reappointed for a second and final term, while the remaining four are new appointments.
The new RECs have been deployed as follows:  Mrs. Asmau Sani Maikudi,  Zamfara state; Sam Olugbadebo Olumekun, Lagos state; Prof. Riskuwa A. Shehu, Jigawa state; and Barr. Kassim Gana Geidam, Adamawa state.
 
Others are: Jibrin Ibrahim Zarewa, Sokoto state; Abdulganiyu Olayinka Raji, Ekiti state; Prof. Samuel Egwu, Niger state; Mike A. Igini, Akwa Ibom state; and Sadiq Abubakar Musa, Kebbi state.
The Commission said all deployments are with immediate effect.
 
INEC REGISTERS ONE MORE POLITICAL PARTY
 
Following a Court order, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a Certificate of Registration to the African Peoples Party (APP). 
 
This was made known by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Yakubu Mahmood who said the Commission in compliance with a court order, has issued a certificate of Registration to the African People’s Party (APP).
He said the Party had earlier applied for registration in 2014 and added that, with the registration of APP, the total number of political parties in the country now stands at 46.
 
The INEC Chairman, made the disclosure today, at the swearing-in ceremony of nine new Resident Electoral Commissioners, at the INEC Headquarters, Abuja.
He further disclosed that at the end of the first quarter of the on-going nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Exercise, the Commission registered a total of 1,810,153 persons. 
 
Professor Yakubu added that as at the second week of this quarter of the CVR exercise, “some 282,281 citizens have been registered, making a total of 2,092,434 new registrants so far”.
